Cameron – more than nutrition lip service needed

This week – we have no option but to bang hard on two drums within spitting distance of David Cameron’s still-new, Conservative government.

The scientific advisory committee (SACN) that advises the UK government on nutrition matters has closed its consultation today which proposes no change to the abysmally low daily recommendation of just 10 micrograms (400 IU) of vitamin D per day for most of the population. The recommendation has been in place for 26 years and flies in the face of a mass of new research and findings. Find out why it’s so important that the SACN changes its recommendation in its final report, at least to the equivalent recommendations in the USA.

This week, we’re also asking the British people—as many as possible—to sign a petition to stop David Cameron’s government from reneging on the previous coalition government’s commitment to offer free school lunches for infants, based on studies showing that the improved nutrition also improved academic performance. It’s also likely the policy could go some way to tackle a future obesity time bomb.

Both areas show just how hard it is to get governments to make any kind of commitment to preventative healthcare—and to understand that good nutrition is a critical part, not only of healthcare, but also impacts things as diverse as quality of life and the academic capacity of a nation.

David Cameron is taking advice on how to use diet and exercise to deal with childhood obesity from celebrity chef Jamie Oliver. He’s also stated his commitment to making this a priority. But is the British Prime Minister just paying lip service to nutrition?

No time to give up – let’s take action

We’re hoping that the SACN takes note of our consultation response, among others, and recommends higher levels of vitamin D, in line with the science. There’s also a chance that people power can be brought to bear to stop the Cameron government from cutting the free school lunch programme for infants in England. It’s a great example of how nutrition can deliver big solutions with long-term consequences. Let’s do what we can to make this happen.
