  Brexit and cancer

I was in America at the American College of Nutrition meeting the day Donald Trump won the US Presidency. Reactions varied hugely and it was difficult among this nutritionally astute, almost entirely North American audience, to find many that were in a celebratory mood. But most were wide open to the significance of the wave of revolt against the status quo that had now raged across America and was surely one of the main factors that swept Trump to power.  We then were witness to the news reports about a small but vocal proportion of the US population taking to the streets, rebelling at the decision their democratic nation had just made.

On the other side of the pond, UK citizens, the Government, the Opposition, Nigel Farage and Ukip, and even the Courts, are deep in debate over how to handle the British people’s decision in the referendum of 23 June, and how now to proceed. The same discontent among the people over the status quo has been brought to bear, yet, as the issues are considered further, distinct camps are beginning to develop. These include those who want to see Parliamentary scrutiny used as a tool to reverse the referendum result, those who want to see Parliament closely involved not only in the Article 50 process, but also in all that follows thereafter — and those who support the Government’s prerogative to trigger Article 50 without any Parliamentary involvement whatsoever.

Uncertainty is the only thing that we can be sure of at present. In our lead piece this week, we delve into some of the options, and the UK Government’s plan to sideline the Parliament could be a signal that it plans to ride roughshod over public needs and demands, including in the natural health space. It’s time for us to keep our eyes wide open.

In our second piece, we provide a preview for the conference being organised by our strategic partner, Yes to Life, in London this Saturday. The theme is cancer and newly emerging metabolic theories, there’ll be some big names there and — I will be speaking too.

In health, naturally
