NHS: impossible birthday predicament? |
Our two pieces this week are juxtaposed into what looks like a near-impossible predicament for the people of the UK — and the healthcare system so many rely on.
On one hand, there is a strong will (especially around this time of the 70th birthday celebrations) to do everything possible to make the NHS sustainable. That, whether Big Pharma or Big Food like it or not, will require much more effective prevention of preventable diseases. On the other hand, it’s recognised that getting nutrition right is one big part of the prevention equation. But the UK continues to take its advice from nutritional advisors who are embedded into the very same pseudo-scientific fabric that has sold us various lies or scientific misrepresentations, from ‘cholesterol causes heart disease’, to ‘low fat diets are the healthiest’.
Read, digest – and make up your own mind. In the meantime, we’ll continue doing our level best, in conjunction with many others, including a band of our readers, to help facilitate the changes that are so badly needed. The starting point has, of course, to be to regain health sovereignty. And for the people of the UK, Brexit represents a potential opportunity to usher change – change that needs to go well beyond merely the regulatory system that controls the products and services that affect our health. You’ll discover a lot more in our ‘blueprint for health system sustainability’ out later this month.
In the news, Monsanto (yes, the name’s still out there!) meddles in GM research, another scientific nail is put in the ‘calories in, calories out’ coffin and a new study shows how high dose vitamin D can reduce breast cancer risk by a whopping 82% (if you can get it!). We’ve also thrown in links to two vlogs that show how an influential US mainstream doctor has become a ‘poster girl’ for the movement pushing for a healthcare shift from disease management to wellness creation.
