At a point in human history when more and more believed that the people had lost their power – something changed. Brexit and Trump’s election became beacons of this rediscovered democratic power. It seemed more important to some that the power be tested and deployed – even if the outcome of its use wasn’t easy to predict. It still isn’t.
But today we’ve seen another spectacular use of this power. It’s even more poignant that it was used in the European Parliament, to block the European Commission’s proposal for a regulation that would authorise a staggering 21 GMO varieties EU-wide for use in food and feed. Over 65% of Europe’s half a billion citizens oppose GM crops – and it’s entirely fitting that our elected representatives followed through in Strasbourg earlier today.
