Pharma and agrochemical interests are coalescing it seems. This evening I was interviewed by Russian TV given Bayer's proposed $66 billion merger with Monsanto. Syngenta and ChemChina have already merged, Dow and Dupont are a long way down the road - so be prepared that three companies might soon have control of the greater part of the human food supply globally. Monsanto will probably be grateful to have a new name given its current one is rightly so tarnished. For those of us who want to live independently of these profit-seeking giants, we're going to need to become a lot more discriminating, especially if we choose to use supermarkets as the main ports of call for our daily food needs. The German public's reaction if regulators let Bayer's buy-out of Monsanto go ahead may well set the tone for the future of this pharma-agri-biotech giant that is set to become the largest company of its type in the world. It's good to see there are already demonstrations in Berlin. Many Germans are well aware that Bayer spun out of IG Farben that made the gas used to poison 6 million Jews during the Holocaust, as well as explosives and many other materials used in Hitler's war. It's taken just 70 years for this company, albeit in new clothes, to re-assume such dominance. And all that stands in the way is the public. More on this next week.
