The new cancer drugs that don’t work |

The catch-cry of the skeptics has long been ‘medicine is medicine that works, and alternative medicine is medicine that doesn’t work’. Unfortunately, as we are reminded by a recent BMJ-published study on so-called ‘breakthrough’ cancer drugs, contrary to not just popular opinion, licensed drugs don’t need to be shown to work before they’re licensed. The public – and especially cancer patients – are at risk of being seriously misled and given false hope. Many presume the excruciating cost of the new, more targeted drugs makes them both safer and more effective.
