- A new blood test is being touted as a way to predict a person's risk of developing a range of chronic conditions up to 10 years prior to their onset. Ten of the researchers in the study promoting the test are linked with pharma giant, GSK. This means it’s much more likely the results will be used for pharmacological and vaccine based 'preventative' treatments than helping people to reduce their disease risk through dietary, lifestyle and behavioural changes, which are still the most powerful and well evidenced options available
- When a case study that uses a multi-displinary approach to help autistic children heal is published and provides hope for children and their families affected by autism, it's predictably criticised for its methodology and conflicts of interest by skeptics seeking to undermine its findings. Let's remind ourselves that when a study claims efficacy for a pharmaceutical product, which is conducted by scientists working with and/or financed by pharma companies that stand to benefit from said study, conflicts of interest are hidden or pushed under the carpet. We appear to have lost our way scientifically; case studies that show positive outcomes from multifactorial interventions should be reason enough to conduct more in-depth studies trying to evaluate which factors are among the most important, as well as trying to understand their underlying mechanisms.

- Breakthrough moment: The Lancet standing Commission on Dementia’s 2024 report finds that dementia is preventable! Leading researchers in the field have known this for some time, as all the experts and the 7000 of us that celebrated Alzheimer's Prevention Day in May demonstrated. The Lancet report identifies 14 modifiable risk factors, regardless of genetic risk factors, acknowledging a healthy diet and lifestyle both mitigate the risk of developing dementia. However, what should have been an opportunity to explore the multitude of natural health options, was sadly squandered. There were no groundbreaking revelations, and the focus was on pharmaceutical and mainstream dietary interventions that have consistently failed to effectively prevent the onset of dementia — as well as most other chronic, preventable diseases.

- Just drink a few shakes and consume a few protein bars to lose weight and put your type 2 diabetes into remission. That’s the message being shared by the media following publication of a new study in, once again, The Lancet. Of those that started the programme (n=1,740), 55% (n=960) completed the programme, of which 32% (n=145) achieved remission. The biggest problem with such dietary regimes, is that maintaining adherence to a low calorie shake diet is extremely hard, and can be expensive compared with a combination of fasting and eating whole foods. And, even if you manage to lose weight and put your diabetes into remission, once you start eating real food again, because of the metabolic damage the diet can inflict, more often than not people regain all, if not more weight. But such concerns were not a concern of The Lancet authors
- In contrast, the very real problems associated with ‘Western’ diets have once again been been exposed by a recent study published in Nature Medicine, which shows them to be a key driver of gut dysbiosis, chronic inflammation and the development of chronic disease. The authors of the paper call for sustainable changes to the way we eat to stop the continued detrimental effects of ‘Westernized’ diets. The problems with ultra-processed foods (UPFs), which many now rely on, is raised in a recent UK Parliamentary report, which acknowledges the health issues associated with UPFs
- The Austrian government has released new dietary guidelines that align with the EAT-Lancet Planetary Diet’s recommendations for massive reductions in the consumption of animal products. The new plate image shows a quarter of an egg along with a miniscule piece of steak under protein recommendations, which encourages higher consumption of plant-based proteins.

- Two recent studies, published in Cell Reports Medicine and Biological Research, respectively, continue the seemingly coordinated demonisation of ketogenic diets. The first compared a keto diet with a low-sugar diet and a “moderate” diet, used as a control, over a four week period. The researchers raise concerns about increases in LDL cholesterol, decreased glucose tolerance and reductions of bifidobacteria in the gut microbiome. The second study using a ‘high fat diet’ with unknown fat composition (45% total fats) in rats, over a nine week period, also raised concern over changes in the gut microbiome and the potential for obesity and related anxiety. Both studies were extremely limited in their scope and timescales leaving more questions than answers and, in our view, in no way substantively devalue the metabolic and other benefits of well-balanced keto diets based on whole foods and appropriate timing of eating intervals (intermittent fasting)
- An interesting survey conducted by the Type 1 Keto website, of nearly 150 type 1 diabetics, gives a good snapshot of the positive effects of keto and low carb diets for type 1 diabetics.

- As Beyond Meat’s revenue continues to fall and its losses rack up, it’s now turned its attention to creating a new range of ‘healthy’ plant-based sausages claimed to contain a plethora of “wholesome” ingredients. Look beyond the slick marketing though and you’ll find some seriously deceptive and misleading health-washing disguising a range of products using highly processed plant-based isolates that have surprisingly little data proving safety or benefit and cannot be assumed to be a healthy addition to anyone’s diet. Michele Simon has more on her Substack
- This is the ultimate move in the disruption of traditional agricultural systems. Farmers will no longer need to worry about losing their livelihoods to lab-grown meat, as a Dutch and German company develop systems that will sneak lab-grown meat in the back door, by enabling farmers to use stem cells from their own animals to turn their farms into ‘cultivated’ meat farms! How many farmers will be gagging to ditch their livestock farms for stem call, we wonder?

- Yet another agricultural pest has mutated to become resistant to the GM corn designed to wipe it out as nature, once again, takes on so-called biotechnological 'fixes'. Corn earworm has become the latest pest to become resistant to all GM Bt corn variants in past eight years. It’s also been noted that yields of the GM corn are no better than non-GMO corn. GM Watch has more
- In a new opinion on new genomic techniques (NGTs), the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) seemingly supports suggestions from Big Biotech that microorganisms obtained by NGTs pose no greater risk than microorganisms that have developed from random (natural) mutation. We believe this view to be flawed, scientifically, because any trait edited into a genome may have unpredictable effects on gene expression—something that has been demonstrated with Bored Cow cultured 'milk' that has been launched on the US market. The opinion further prepares the regulatory landscape for continued deregulation of genetically engineered organisms to be released wholesale into the environment without adequate safety testing or the need to label them as they enter the human food chain. This is a very slippery slope—and ways of stopping the NGT juggernaut is high on our list of priorities
- The push for deregulation of NGTs is being supported by a new paper published in GM Crops & Food, using the usual arguments that such technology is needed to feed the world’s population and protect the environment. It doesn’t, as expected, consider that such organisms could themselves, pose a huge risk to both human and planetary health
- In Thailand new legislation has been introduced (article in Thai) that will accelerate the approval and release of gene edited organisms in agriculture
- Writing in 2017, Rob Verkerk PhD, predicted the next nirvana for Big Pharma companies facing a massive patent cliff would be biologics and biosimilars. Since the covid situation and the wholescale introduction of mRNA genetic vaccines, pharma is now rushing headlong to invest in biotech companies as it attempts to stave off financial ruin. Max Jones, writing in Unlimited Hangout, predicts a scenario where pharma, once thought too big to fail, moves to takeover the World Health Organization and capture its global regulatory system, which would unleash a tsunami of blockbuster drugs with unknown effects and consequences on the global population. It's a long read but definitely worth the time.
ANH-USA Update
- Senator Dick (Dastardly) Durbin strikes again as he re-introduces his anti-supplement bill that would require mandatory product listing for all dietary supplements, which would wipe most of the smaller players in the sector. It’s up to us stop his shenanigans again and protect our access to dietary supplements. Write to Congress and tell them to oppose the legislation
- ‘Dastardly’ Durbin doesn’t just want to introduce crazy controls on dietary supplements he also wants to create a new agency, separate from the FDA, called the Federal Food Administration (FFA), to control food and dietary supplements. If the Bill is passed it could lead to the exclusion of certain supplements and foods from the market, threatening our freedoms and choice, as the new agency is captured by powerful corporations. Find out, from recently-appointed ANH General Counsel, Jonathan Emord, why it’s critical to oppose the creation of this proposed new agency.
