  • BREAKING NEWS! Water fluoridation presents an “unreasonable risk” to the health of children. The ruling from a US court, as a momentous legal case brought by the Fluoride Action Network and others challenging water fluoridation finally concludes. The case has taken 7 years, but will now force the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to reduce the allowable levels of fluoride in water. The ruling puts to bed, once for all, the continued claims from the US government (and others) that water fluoridation is safe and necessary for people's health
  • Novel food approval for ‘alternative’ meat products in the UK is set to be fast-tracked. The UK Food Standards Agency plans to introduce changes that would allow ministerial intervention in the approval process along with the expedited approval of products already authorised as 'safe' by other countries that have a partnership with the UK
  • As the demonisation of meat consumption continues, Dr Ron Hoffman, explores the evidence for and against the health benefits of meat, coming down firmly on the side of regeneratively farmed meat.

  • In 2008, the HPV vaccine was introduced amidst promises to eradicate cervical cancer. Yet the hype has continued to bely the statistics, as late stage cervical cancer rates continue to rise in younger women. The latest Cancer Progress Report from the American Association for Cancer Research confirms an increase in cervical cancer (also evidenced by Cancer Research UK) in women aged 30-34, which is blamed on low rates of HPV vaccination, as efforts to increase vaccination rates intensify. It's also interesting to note that data from Cancer Research UK shows increasing rates of head and neck related cancers and penile cancer, since the HPV vaccine was introduced.

  • UK residents are being exhorted to hand over their health data as part of a large study to help prevent chronic disease in the future. Our Future Health, a massive study targeting every adult in the UK, is promising to revolutionise the prevention, detection and treatment of diseases such as dementia, cancer, diabetes, heart disease and more. It’s now opening clinics across Wales to reach more people. However, the study’s version of prevention is to collect data to allow earlier detection of the potential for individuals to develop different disease states and intervene using pharmaceutical treatments ever earlier. The use of such important data to inform dietary and lifestyle changes to truly prevent the development of disease states appears to have been completely overlooked.

  • Weight loss drugs are key to resolving the obesity epidemic according to a new report from think-tank ING that waxes lyrical on their benefits. The report acknowledges that prevention is key through the adoption of a healthy diet and lifestyle, but then dismisses the ability of people to make such changes due to the perceived cost of healthy eating. The authors fail to acknowledge the very real adverse effects of these drugs, along with the weight gain experienced by users when they cease to use them, which exacerbates their risk of developing further chronic diseases.

  • GMO scientists have turned their attention to gluten. Spanish scientists from the Institute for Sustainable Agriculture, are using CRISPR technology to develop gluten-free wheat. Publishing in the Journal of Experimental Botany the researchers report they’ve successfully created second generation wheat with low to no gluten. However, there’s no guarantee such mutations wouldn’t reverse in future generations or that off-target mutations wouldn’t cause other issues in people with gluten sensitivities
  • Food businesses in the EU are calling for rigorous labelling and product traceability of new GMOs as the EU moves to deregulate organisms produced via new genomic techniques (NGTs), to allow consumers free choice. The Open Letter, signed by 376 businesses across 16 EU Member States, forms part of the Campaign for GMO-free Food, which runs until the 13 October 2024
  • In Nigeria, a coalition of organisations opposed to GMOs, is calling for the commercialisation of GM crops to be suspended, following the announcement of field trials of GM potatoes
  • Highly toxic chemicals banned from use in the EU are showing up in food imported into the EU from third countries, which continue their use. PAN Europe has analysed key data to reveal the true extent of the problem
  • The EU Commission has restricted two sub-groups of per- and polyfluoroalkyl (PFAS) chemicals, also known as 'forever chemicals', because their use “…poses an unacceptable risk to human health and the environment”. However, their use will continue for between 18 months and 5 years to give manufacturers time to find ‘safer’ replacement products
  • The simplification of the REACH system and provision of clarity around PFAS is high on the list of priorities for the EU’s new environment commissioner. However, many are already questioning her remit, which once again appears to be one that leans towards supporting industry, rather than focusing on banning the continued use of highly toxic chemicals. The process of phasing out the use of toxic chemicals in the EU is set out by the Council of the European Union’s ‘one substance one assessment’ mandate, adopted earlier this year, along with a report from the European Environmental Bureau (EEB), detailing the battle to control chemical use between opposing factions in the EU
  • A landmark report the, ‘Future of European Competitiveness, written by former Italian Prime Minister, Mario Draghi, blames measures designed to protect biodiversity, reduce pollution and restrict the use of ‘forever chemicals’ for hampering the EU's competitiveness.
