- The WHO and UN have published a joint statement on 'healthy' diets. The statement continues to push outdated dietary recommendations including high carb (up to 75% carbs), low fat (less than 30% of which no more than 10% should be saturated) plus protein levels of 15% or less. Red meat consumption also takes a hit. On a positive note, it does recommend a wide diversity of foods to ensure people get the micronutrients needed to promote good health and warns against the use of non-nutritive sweeteners. Yet again, this is a missed opportunity for health authorities to create meaningful change, based on up to date science, that would benefit the health of millions around the globe
- The UK House of Lords (HOL) has also published a report into what it calls “…our broken food system”, which sets out ways in which to tackle the obesity crisis. Sadly, once again an opportunity to overhaul the UK’s Eatwell Guidelines, which are now many years out of date, has been squandered with what is a sop to the food industry. Many pages of ‘Recipe for Health: a plan to fix our broken food system’ are dedicated to ultra-processed food and the food industry. But at the heart of the paper is the premise that existing ‘healthy’ eating guidelines remain valid. The report’s authors also focus on mandatory reformulation of food products to make them ‘healthier,’ ignore the conflicts of interest of members of the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) and ignore current science that shows the efficacy of low carb diets that can put type 2 diabetes, along with many other chronic conditions, into remission
- The boss of food giant, Nomad Foods, is supporting a recommendation made in the HOL report to require food manufacturers to publish the proportions of their sales that are from, so-called, ‘healthy’ and ‘unhealthy’ foods in order to make companies compete to improve the 'healthiness' of their products. He’s also backing calls for traffic light labelling, which can be incredibly misleading especially when it comes to wholefoods naturally replete in unprocessed fats.

- A new commentary published in Globalization and Health seeks to explore the harms of plastic packaging and the toxins found in it, that now encases many of the food products found on our supermarket shelves. Many of the chemicals such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), BPA and endocrine disruptors have been linked to health issues such as cancer, cardiovascular and metabolic disease along with premature death
- The topic of geoengineering our environment to combat global warming is emerging from the shadows. On 22 October 2024, the American Geophysical Union (AGU) released its Ethical Framework Principles for Climate Intervention Research, as efforts to greenwash and combat 'misinformation' around geoengineering accelerate. The topic of Solar Radiation Modification (SRM) – essentially blocking sunlight reaching the surface of the planet and reflecting it back into space – is discussed in a new paper published by the UN’s Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean.
- EUROCAM Chair, Elisa Baldini, along with EUROCAM representatives are taking part in the 74th Session of the WHO Regional Committee for Europe, taking place this week in Copenhagen. ANH-USA update
- ANH-USA’s General Counsel, Johnathan Emord Esq, has filed a lawsuit, in conjunction with homeopathic medicine manufacturer, Meditrend, to protect American’s right to choose how they look after their health. The lawsuit challenges the US Food & Drug Administration’s (FDA) recent regulatory changes treating homeopathic medicines as conventional pharmaceuticals, which could see homeopathic medicines being banned and ultimately withdrawn from general sale. Find out more and donate to support the action…
- Once someone has been labelled as having a particular disease they start to look for information. Such a search often leads them to the many patient advocacy groups that exist to supposedly protect and champion people’s health. However, many such groups receive significant funding from pharmaceutical companies turning them from protectors of health to purveyors of drugs on behalf of their paymaster. Find out more…
