  • Most of us are now well versed in how our gut microbiome can affect our brain health. Researchers publishing in Neurotherapeutics look at the role of the gut microbiome in the development of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease, dementia and multiple sclerosis. They confirm what we've been advocating for years: that making dietary and lifestyle changes to improve gut health, is an effective way to reduce the risk of developing such conditions and can help to improve the health and wellbeing of people starting down such disease pathways
  • What’s less well recognised when it comes to microbiomes, is that we have microbiomes all over our body, from our head to our toes, both internally and externally. Even your home has its own unique microbiome! So does our brain. A recent study published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases, examines the role of pathogenic microbes (known as the pathobiome) entering the brain, often originating in the gut, and the ways in which they contribute to the onset of Alzheimer's Disease. Although possibly a new dimension to mainstream approaches in the treatment of Alzheimer's Disease, this has long been acknowledged by integrative practitioners.

  • Does saturated fat (SFA) cause cardiovascular disease? A new paper, using data from Norway, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, says it does and should be limited in our diet. The researchers relied on three ‘screenings’ between 1974 and 1988 using self-reported diet data and calculated non-HDL cholesterol levels to extrapolate the role of SFA in consequent deaths in the following 35+ years. However, no further analysis of diet was made post-1988. Rather than the continued demonisation of SFA based on outdated science, it’s long overdue to see in the mainstream the many and varied beneficial roles that fat, including saturated fat, has played in ensuring that we, as a species, are still here today.

  • Acupuncture reduced pain and improved function for Chinese patients with chronic sciatica from a herniated disc according to a new paper published in JAMA Internal Medicine
  • A range of food, health and children’s advocacy groups are calling on the UK government to tax foods containing too much sugar or salt in an attempt to tackle childhood obesity. An open letter signed by 35 groups, claims that by taxing such products, it would force manufacturers to reformulate them to make them 'healthier'. However, these calls for increased taxation don’t take into account that reformulation often uses substitutes, such as non-nutritive sweeteners (eg. aspartame, sucralose, Acesulfame K), that come with their own raft of negative health impacts, which could lead to more, not less, chronic disease
  • Low-carbohydrate diets allow adults with type-2 diabetes (T2D) to manage the condition more effectively and reduce or stop using medication. A new study, published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, endorses existing knowledge that adopting a low-carb diet can recover beta-cell function in the pancreas and put T2D into remission.

  • Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global concern as more and more pathogens become resistant — even to last ditch antimicrobials. In response to the problem, a new report from the World Health Organization, explores the use and development of a raft of different vaccines to target 24 pathogens in efforts to reduce the problem of AMR
  • Dr Saul Justin Newman, is a researcher who’s spent his research dollars debunking the notion of longevity in Blue Zones. For his efforts, he’s been awarded an Ig Nobel Prize for “fundamental and comedic mismatches between longevity claims and observed patterns” in the data supporting the extraordinary longevity of people in Blue Zones — a fact which he opposes. Whilst consensus on the data may or may not have been reached, it's hard to argue with the healthful thinking, attributes and interventions that are laid out in the many books, articles and references on the subject. See ANH's article below by founder, Rob Verkerk PhD.

  • A new Research Letter published in JAMA exposes the revolving door of nonroyalty payments made by industry to physicians for promoting new products. Once competing products were launched many of those physicians then moved to work for the competing manufacturers
  • When we think of memory we immediately think of the brain. However, new research published in Nature Communications, has found that cells in our body, other than brain cells, can activate a “memory gene” allowing them to learn and retain memories
  • Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), sadly, seem to be the norm, rather than the exception. A new systematic review and meta-analysis published in JAMA Pediatrics reveals that nearly 60% of children under the age of 18, included in the analysis, have experienced 1 or more ACEs.

  • Smartglasses are here. Rayban's Wayfarer Smart Glasses, which look like ordinary glasses, allow their wearers to film in real time (without people being aware!), listen to music, make calls and livestream directly to Facebook. The latest version also has inbuilt artificial intelligence technology. They're being seen as a precursor to fully augmented reality (AR) eyewear. Wearers questioned for a study published in PLOS One admitted to risky behaviour, such as driving whilst wearing the glasses and filming people without their knowledge. Should we be concerned? Or just shrug our shoulders and say "oh well it's inevitable" and let it go — along with the many other technological 'advances' that are damaging young people's mental health and pushing us ever closer to a fractured, controlled and isolated society.
