  • The UK Government is pushing ahead with plans to fortify non-wholemeal flour with synthetic folic acid. The government says medicating the whole population will prevent around 200 cases of neural tube defects each year. However, there’s no guarantee those targeted by the move will eat fortified foods, while those who don’t need it, could be over-supplemented. Another important consideration is the fact that those with methylation gene mutations (about 40% of the world's population) are hindered, not helped by synthetic folic acid (a form, which is never found in nature)  because they cannot make the conversion to the active form (which is found in nature). The result is to have large amounts of unmetabolised folic acid in the bloodstream, which can oxidise and then pose a cancer risk.

  • The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has doubled the ‘safe’ intake level of the non-nutritive sweetener, saccharin, despite concerns over DNA damage and links to cancer, which are now disputed. EFSA’s review was ‘supported’ by evidence from industry and organisations representing companies manufacturing non-nutritive sweeteners.

  • Sitting for long periods can increase your risk of heart disease even if you work out regularly. A study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, used data from 90,000 people who wore an accelerometer for a week to compare their amount of sitting time with heart disease diagnoses in participants followed for almost a decade. The researchers found that sitting for more than 10.6 hours per day significantly increased these risks, even for people who exercised regularly and met recommended guidelines for moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). Reducing sedentary time is important for health, but heart health in particular. We recommend getting up and moving vigorously for 5-10 mins every two hours to mitigate the effects of sitting
  • Climate change is now being used as a tool to justify the use of gene editing techniques because ‘traditional’ breeding techniques aren’t able to keep up with the changes caused by climate change
  • Do you check before you share? According to a new study published in Nature Human Behaviour, a whopping 75% of us don't read beyond headlines when sharing information on FB, instead 'sharing without clicks' (SWoCs). The purpose of the study becomes clear through commentary from the authors, who are looking for ways to reduce the sharing of so-called mis- and disinformation
  • Autism is a multi-factorial condition affecting multiple body systems. A new preprint paper, currently undergoing peer review, pushes back against the belief that autism is purely a neurological condition. The authors explore its effects on the immune, digestive and central nervous system, amongst others, which they describe as a "whole -body" approach. They also focus on the myriad environmental influences that may contribute to the onset of autism. The Defender has more.

  • The Center for Countering Digital Hate, authors of the “Disinformation Dozen”, has been subpoenaed by the US House Judiciary Committee, to provide documents related to all communications with the Biden administration and social media platforms to censor online users. The Defender has the full story
  • The chances of the Australian misinformation bill getting through is looking decidedly rocky as all the independent senators have declared they will oppose the bill. Nothing is guaranteed until the vote has taken place but it will take some serious pressure to turn this particular juggernaut around
  • A recent study published in Nature explores the effectiveness of pre- and debunking. The researchers found debunking was more effective at changing people’s minds than prebunking, which was seen as manipulative. In some cases prebunks significantly increased participants' intention to share a ‘misleading’ article in order to express their disagreement.

Covid related Update

  • The latest draft of the World Health Organization’s pandemic agreement (treaty) has been released but consensus has yet to be reached on all areas of the agreement. This means that the special meeting of the World Health Assembly (WHA) proposed for December will not take place. Negotiators are now preparing to push for adoption of the agreement at the next WHA meeting in May 2025
  • Interventions designed to deal with covid turned a “seasonal influenza-like illness” into a pandemic of “government overreach and collective hysteria". A new preprint study published on Researchgate concludes lockdowns, masking and covid vaccines ultimately did more harm than good
  • A paper that found 74% of the 325 cases (and 1 necropsy case) in published autopsy results reviewed, that mentioned covid vaccination, were directly related to covid shots. It was retracted one year after publication in Preprints with The Lancet. It was then republished in Forensic Science International, which also withdrew it. Now the article has been published in Science, Public Health Policy and the Law.
