- The extent of Big Food’s stealth marketing of its products to children in the UK, has been revealed in the BMJ. Using grants and funding, free educational resources and a range of campaigns, the food industry has snuck into educational and childcare settings for many years. An open letter, signed by 38 doctors, has been sent to the to the UK government calling for curbs on these practices. The BMJ opens a huge can of worms
- Shocking new statistics reveal nearly three-quarters of the US adult population was overweight or obese in 2021. A new study published in The Lancet, predicts that 80% of the adult population will be overweight or obese by 2050 if nothing is done to curb the exponential increase in levels of obesity. The researchers also predict that nearly 7 million additional young people under 24 years, will be overweight or obese by 2050. The study places a large proportion of the blame for such increases fairly and squarely on the twin doorsteps of the food and pharma industries
- The US dietary guidelines committee recently shied away from tackling the health issues related to ultra-processed foods (UPFs), yet new evidence of its harms to health continues to be published
- A new study presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) found eating a diet high in ultra-processed foods (UPFs) increases fat storage inside thigh muscles regardless of the amount of calories eaten or physical activity undertaken
- Swedish researchers publishing in the Clinical Nutrition Journal found higher intakes of UPFs skews the balance of cholesterol in the body, increasing levels of very low density lipoprotein (VLDL), which is an essential part of the development of heart disease
- High intakes of foods containing high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), a common component of UPFs, has been linked to increased growth of tumour cells in a mouse study published in Nature. US. Right To Know has more…
- Another mouse study, published in Heliyon, shows the ability of epigenetic changes to affect multiple generations. When mice were fed low protein diets (often associated with high UPFs), the next four generations of mice suffered from lower birthweights and smaller kidneys. Correcting the diets of the first generation of pups had no impact on the following 3 generations, lending further weight to the potential impact of epigenetics on our health and that of future generations.

- Although our lifespan has increased in recent decades, the amount of time someone spends in good health has reduced. A new study published in JAMA Network Open shows that time between the end of someone’s healthy years and when they die—known as the healthspan/lifespan gap, is widening across all the member states of the World Health Organization.

- The importance of a healthy gut microbiome is reinforced by a new mouse study in Nature, which has identified two distinct types of neurons in the guts of mice, which are thought to form part of the gut/brain connection exchanging information between the gut and brain. Specialised neurons can also be found in other organs including the heart
- Scientists are continuing to tinker with organisms in labs to create new variants that could threaten the very existence of both plants, animals and humans. A new study reveals the threat from the development of 'mirror' bacteria in labs as scientists warn that such organisms could pose a serious global threat to humans, plants and animals as they could potentially evade many immune mechanisms as they escape detection. The authors conclude that unless the safety of these organisms can be proven, all research into mirror bacteria should be stopped
- As geoengineering steps out of the shadows, a company in the US is already on a mission to cool the planet. Make Sunsets claims to have launched 90 balloons, containing sulphur dioxide (SO2), into the stratosphere to release approximately 60,000 grams of SO2, in defiance of scientists cautioning against such an approach
- As confusion continues over the status of CBD products in the UK, the UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) has published a white paper announcing that its aiming to harmonise with Home Office standards to enforce strict THC limits and labelling requirements for CBD. An eight-week public consultation is scheduled to take place in early 2025 to provide feedback on the proposed regulations.

- Energy healing, in the form of Reiki therapy, has been shown to provide significant symptom relief in cancer patients receiving standard treatments in a study conducted in the US. The paper, published in the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management, found that patients given Reiki during infusions experienced a clinically significant improvement in nausea, pain, fatigue anxiety.
ANH-USA update
- It’s time to stop the over-medicalisation of our health systems to attain the World Health Organization’s unattainable goal of “complete well-being”. Such a system benefits pharma companies through the massive prescribing of drugs, without ever dealing with the root causes of poor health. Now imagine a world where health is defined by the presence of vitality rather than disease and where people are empowered to manage their own health rather than rely on pills. Which would you prefer? Read more…
- The entire homeopathic industry in the US is under threat by the Food & Drug Administration’s regulatory changes classing all homeopathic medicines as drugs. A recent million dollar settlement of a legal case highlights how vulnerable homeopathic manufacturers in the US are as a result of the new rules. This is why the ANH-USA team has filed a lawsuit challenging the regulatory changes. Help protect access to homeopathic medicines…
Covid related Update
- Head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, is playing both sides of the field in an effort to stave off any actions by the incoming US President, Trump, to remove the US from the WHO and break the pandemic accord
- The US Department of Health and Human Services has once again, quietly extended the protection given to covid vaccine makers that prevents them from being sued. The decision, which is given under the Public Readiness and Emergency Preparedness (PREP) Act, is being justified because there’s still considered to be ‘a credible risk’ that covid could spiral out of control again. The Defender has more
- Adding to the evolving conversation about the effect of covid vaccines on menstrual cycles, is a new study published in the International Journal of Vaccine Theory, Practice, and Research. The self-reported data comes from a subset of women from MyCycleStory, who reported menstrual issues, weren’t covid vaccinated or knowingly had covid but were exposed to people who had been covid vaccinated. Questions have been raised about the methodology of the study. However, the study’s findings add to the totality of evidence in this area and raise further questions about the effects and safety of covid mRNA vaccines
- A new French study published in the journal Therapies, reviews 53 potential safety signals from covid-19 vaccines reported to the Pharmacovigilance and Risk Assessment Committee at the European Medicine Agency by the French National Agency for Medicines and Public Health Products Safety.
