'24 kick off: reduce weight and increase death?
Sorry to have been mischievous with the title - but hey, it's made you read this far, and it does relate directly our two main pieces this week. Welcome to our first full-fat edition of our newsletter this year! What a year it will be, with over half the world's population facing national elections.
Our two main pieces this week tackle matters that we know are on the minds of many. Some 8 months after the covid pandemic was declared over by the WHO, is society back to pre-pandemic rates of mortality? The buzz on social media suggests otherwise - so I've dived into the official data and seen what comes up—and drawn some conclusions that health authorities seem to be tight-lipped about. In our second piece, Meleni and Melissa have danced around another subject that's becoming something of a taboo: weight loss. Millions have made it a priority every January for decades. But as the subject gets forced underground, more and more are flying off to far off lands to have surgeries that could create long-term problems that they're just not being warned about.
We've got some incredibly exciting and game-changing strategies in the making this year that we'll be unfolding as the year proceeds.
