Buzzwords: Resilience and Sustainability

The two principles we look at in each of our main pieces this week are central to resolving the health crises we face, as individuals and as societies. GP burnout has hit an all-time high and it’s a symptom of lack of resilience. Multiple forecasts predict the collapse of healthcare systems in industrialised countries in less than a generation – assuming the status quo. That’s a symptom of their lack of sustainability.

In our lead piece, we introduce the second major component of our model for health system sustainability – that we call the ‘sustainability hallmarks’. This follows our piece about the ‘ecological terrain’ a couple of weeks back.

The Balens Forum at the NEC in Birmingham on Sunday, which we led alongside David Balen, the founder and chairman of Balens Insurance Brokers, followed by Monday’s CPD conference, was all about resilience in healthcare. Not only did it aim to help practitioners become more resilient themselves, it was also about helping their clients and patients to build resilience. Find out more in our second piece this week.
