Week No 41 | 08/10/2020
Is project fear losing its grip?
It's been another 'punchbag week' here in the UK. You know those weeks when you feel as if you've taken so many blows to the head you wonder how you're still standing? But standing we are, and standing we will continue to be. And so many are now standing alongside us with many more joining daily as the realisation hits them that government agendas may present a more pervasive risk than any virus right now. This last week in the UK has seen citizen restrictions tighten without sufficient scientific basis (based on PCR-assessed infections, not disease) - or seeming logic; parliamentary bills, that would have MPs from the past turning in their graves, sail through parliament with narry a whisper of opposition; Downing St rubbish the call from nearly 10,000 scientific and medical experts (and over 90k citizens) to change the approach to the pandemic; and notice that a town near you may soon be policed by new AI-powered surveillance cameras to monitor social distancing. Oh, and of course, let's not forget the new test and vaccine passports. For those of us who thought we were living in a free and democratic society, there are enough body blows in that little list to fell an ox. However, we must draw heart from history and remember that despite a tsunami of challenges, it's the straight stick that remains standing. Even if it takes time and the going gets really rough. Our lead story today looks at whether science and law are oppressors or saviours whilst showing how the anti-lockdown movement is building momentum. Rob Verkerk also gives more detail on some of this week's 'body blows' listed above. But all is not lost when you check out our second story, which uses citizen comments on mainstream news stories as an indication of how the tide of opinion may well be turning. I think you'll find the results interesting and hopefully reinforce your commitment to sourcing information from non-mainstream sources too! Our third piece takes you to the very struggle that inspired the formation of ANH 18 years ago - European efforts to restrict vitamins and minerals to levels that fail to provide benefits for most people. It's now Norway's turn - and yesterday we submitted a detailed report to the European Commission that's asked for comments from interested parties over Norway's plan to bring in restrictions on amounts of vitamins and minerals in food supplements. We were among just 7 organisations or companies that submitted comments. We may feel under siege right now, that there's no way out and the challenges are coming harder and faster daily, but please let's all remember the straight stick analogy and keep walking forwards with our heads held high.
