Masks and chlorine-washed chickens

The edifice that Boris Johnson created that carried him into No10 in December seems to be crumbling more rapidly than it was built. So much for the Churchillian oratory or the Reagan resilience. It’s hard to know what’s going on, whether he can’t function without his ex-wife or Dominic Cummings, or if it’s the aftermath of his severe covid disease or his altered priorities with the arrival of his newborn. Or a combination. But it’s not going well. And there’s a lot at stake. The British government’s greatest recent successes seems to be doing the right thing at the wrong time, or the wrong thing altogether. It’s becoming predictable.

So just as the UK government decide to make mask-wearing compulsory on public transport, we deconstruct the science. Like much of the science the UK has relied on for its covid policies – it’s flimsy to say the least. We also delve into the Agriculture Bill – the biggest reform in UK agriculture since 1947. An issue that was central to Boris Johnson’s election campaign that helped him gain his majority. But for reasons only known to Dominic Cummings and any others that might be in charge, the most important amendment that was set to deliver the Green Brexit that Boris promised – was kyboshed last month. Yesterday the Bill was taken to the Lords and there is only one more democratic opportunity for change.

We’ve been stunned by some of the recent responses from Conservative MPs when asked to consider changes in Government policy intended to help people and planet by developing more sustainable farming, food or health systems. It seems many MPs are now more responsive to the whip than they are to their constituencies. A troubling time for democracy in the country that triggered the Western transition from farming economies to industrialised ones.

Let’s not lose focus of what’s most important – and that includes the power and resilience of nature in determining how we grow our foods or look after our bodies – as well as defending our democratic voice and fundamental rights.
