Preventable harms and health

It's hard to be emotionally detached from the words 'preventable harms in healthcare'. The very concept engenders a gut response and may trigger deeper wounds if you or your family have been directly affected. Medical care often involves complications that are unavoidable. But avoidable harms play havoc with our mental state and are much harder to reconcile.

This #ThrowbackThursday, we revisit the area of preventable harms in medicine. The silent epidemic of modern healthcare, because despite all the investment into making modern medicine safe, avoidable harms continue to rise. If you live in a high-income country, one in 10 patients will be harmed by the medical care they receive. What if you or a family member is that one? Seen as the architect of our modern healthcare paradigm, it's no wonder that levels of trust in pharma are also plummeting. People are looking to natural, safer and more effective alternatives, which is why this is becoming a pitched battle over profits.

On the theme of natural alternatives and empowered, DIY self care, following last week's video we release Part 2 in our hacking your healthspan video series. By addressing function in all 12 domains, you can't help but create health, not disease.

We leave you with a very full basket of news snippets this week. The first definitely calls time on the current paradigm of medicine where preventable harms are rife and rising. A new paper in JAMA demonstrates that patients treated with a Functional Medicine model had significantly better health outcomes than patients treated with conventional medicine over the same period.

With the world in apparent turmoil, there are still clear signposts to follow for those with eyes to see. In the end, they are our bodies and it's our choice.

In health, naturally
