Week No 22 | 30/05/2019
Safeguarding our kids and our mental health
It’s #Throwback Thursday, so we’ve dipped into the ANH-Intl archives to bring you this week’s newsletter. Our lead article reflects once again our society’s continued reliance on ultra-processed foods, along with the loss of interest in food provenance — the knowledge of where the food we eat comes from. The combination is contributing to an increase in largely preventable chronic diseases that affect everyone, from the elderly to the young. We revisit the ANH-Intl Food4Kids guidelines, emphasising the need to protect our children’s health while safeguarding their future wellbeing. After all, they are the future. Following last week’s Mental Health Awareness week in the UK, we reflect, in our second article, on the deepening crisis affecting not just ordinary citizens, but healthcare professionals too. This is a major driver behind the ANH health sustainability blueprint, which introduces the concept of the ‘Ecological Terrain’, that focuses equally on our internal and external ‘health ecosystems’, including the complex factors that affect our physical, mental and emotional health. We identify the need to address 12 distinct ‘domains’ in order to create optimal, vibrant health. This week’s bite-sized news snippets bring you a study linking poor diet to increased cancer risk; the NHS being exposed as a junk food supplier; antibiotic contaminated rivers and EE’s launch of ‘5G’ today despite numerous unanswered questions over the wireless technology’s safety. Rob Verkerk and I are currently in the US attending the Institute for Functional Medicine annual conference and are very grateful for the able assistance of Melissa Smith, back at base, in bringing you this week’s newsletter.
