WHO fever, microplastics and mouth bugs

The WHO believes its nearly 200 country members should not be able to do their own thing (an idea we used to call national sovereignty) in the event of another pandemic, and should follow its lead instead. Negotiations on how this will work are now at fever pitch, the media’s barely reporting on it, and anyone who’s critical gets branded a conspiracy theorist.

In our feature this week, I break down why these partially secret negotiations are so important, why there’s so much confusion, and how the WHO and leading donors' gameplan drives a coach and horses through long-standing principles of medical ethics and human rights.

In our microplastics piece, we explain the seriousness of the microplastics situation we now face around the world, something to which nearly every one of us on the planet has made a contribution. There’s an ever growing body of evidence to suggest the smaller the plastics particles become (yes, many are nano-sized), the more dangerous they are, penetrating cells, tissues and organs, causing disease and other mayhem in the process.
