Who is in control?

I write this cover note to you tonight as I travel across to Amsterdam to the Sustainable Food Summit where I’ll be speaking tomorrow morning. The British newspapers are awash with a political spectre that has been unleashed as the ruling political party within a divided kingdom attempts to find a new leader.

Personalities, policies and support bases are being turned inside out. Every word and its intent uttered by each of the leadership candidates is being analysed and dissected by a frenetic media that has developed great skills of distortion. This distortion means that nothing less than democracy is at risk and only time will tell if the British people will benefit from the decisions the Conservative Party will shortly make.

Distrust of those who control the status quo has the capacity to create, on one hand, chaos. Or, at the other extreme, with the right leadership, immense, positive change. In this context, it’s becoming something of a badge of honour to be a political maverick. Change, most of us would agree, is sorely needed. While Theresa May, in her final weeks as PM, can now focus on something other than Brexit, isn’t it mainly to satisfy her desire for legacy that she’s chosen to issue her zero emissions plan by 2050 when she will have no say in its implementation and it will become the responsibility of the new leader?

This brings us to our two lead stories this week. One is on 5G that in many ways epitomises the blind adoption of technology that benefits the corporatocracy in the absence of any proper consideration for citizens or wildlife. The other is about one of the key elements of our blueprint project, that represents a disruptive approach to healthcare as enacted and supported by the status quo.

Ultimately, we have to ask who is in control of our destiny? Can we really rely on political figures, or public opinion that is swayed by selective information metered largely through privately-controlled media channels that – even in democratic countries – are now massively restricting freedom of expression. Many of us have come to the conclusion that it’s becoming increasingly difficult to rely on our political leaders to bring us the freedoms and choices we need to live fulfilled, healthy lives. We need to be in control ourselves. Despite Facebook blocking our ad account meaning we can no longer promote our posts, we’re happy to see continued and strong organic growth. That means you’re listening and we’re being heard even through a channel that many of us can no longer trust is working in our interest.

The revolution is in process – and we’re all part of it. Let’s stay positive and recognise that if there’s one thing that links us, it’s the recognition that nature will remain one of our most influential teachers.
