Natural News

  • Polypills (a standardised combination of a statin and 3 blood pressure lowering drugs) have been touted for a number of years now, but in recent months there's been a surge in efforts to roll them out wholesale to those over 50 years of age, without any attempt to individualise. A new study published in JAMA Cardiology proclaims the benefits to patients deemed to be at risk of cardiovascular disease, along with huge cost savings in medical care. Following suit, the UK media outlets are blazoning the news that such a pill should be offered by the NHS, based on an op-ed published in The BMJ, written by the founder of a company making polypills. ANH friend, nutrition researcher Zoë Harcombe PhD, looks at the claims made and draws attention to some serious issues that have been omitted from the media fanfare
  • Butter bashing takes on a new level as researchers seek to push the supposed health benefits of plant-based oils. Researchers, including Dr Walter Willett, publishing in JAMA Network, claim that eating butter is associated with an increased risk of death, while plant oils are protective. As expected the media have trumpeted the story across the airwaves. Reading only the press release, as so many journalists do, and you might be convinced – until you delve deeper into the paper and realise that the methodology, analysis and assumptions are weak and compromise the findings. As Dr Zoë Harcombe says “this is not science, it’s propaganda”!
  • The first ever peer-reviewed low-carb/keto food pyramid has been published as part of a new paper in Nutrients. The paper aims to address common concerns about low-carb/ketogenic diets being nutritionally deficient, causing heart disease, increasing mortality and having harmful side effects
  • Lab-grown ‘food products’ could be on sale in the UK, in as little as two years time. Following its announcement of an accelerated approval process for lab-grown foods last year, the UK’s Food Standards Agency (FSA) has now announced the names of the industry partners that will help the FSA to not only draw up the rules around the scheme, but also to benefit from it. The UK government’s science minister took issue with the fast-track process being described as “deregulation”, instead preferring to fudge what's happening, by calling it “pro-innovation regulation”. Either way, such ‘foods’ are not only new to nature, but new to humans with little to no safety checks as to their impact on human health
  • Claims that lab-grown meat is more sustainable than meat from traditional production systems are "not supported by evidence," according to a new review, published in Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition. Data shows its production is "highly energy intensive" with no consideration of waste and environmental pollution. Claims of nutritional equivalence are also questioned as well as highlighting problems with scaling up the technology.

  • Water supplies in North East England will be fluoridated on the premise of protecting children's oral health. The decision comes despite strong opposition, as part of a government consultation, to the proposals and strong evidence showing water fluoridation harms health, particularly to children’s neurodevelopment and IQ (here and here). The decision sets the scene for more water supplies in England to be fluoridated. The Fluoride Free Alliance UK is seeking volunteers to stop the mass medication of people, without informed consent, through water fluoridation. • Representatives of EU Member states have voted to deregulate organisms created using 'new genomic techniques' (NGTs), otherwise known as gene editing, as the fight to regulate such organisms continues. Should the EU cave to industry demands, NGTs will be exempt from labelling, safety checks, monitoring and liability requirements. It would also fling the door wide open to the patenting of such organisms. GM Watch has more
  • Canadian authorities have released proposals to phase out PFAS chemicals, known as ‘forever chemicals’, as a class, after acknowledging their toxicity and persistence in the environment.

  • The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed it will be studying causes of autism and the possible link with vaccination, in line with President Trump’s comments made during his Joint Address to Congress
  • In a blow to people injured by the HPV vaccine, a federal court in the US has ruled in Merck’s favour in a key bellwether lawsuit, alleging Merck concealed the risks of the vaccine. The court concluded Merck could not add warnings to the vaccine’s label without prior approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) essentially meaning it could dodge any duty to warn of the risks posed by the vaccine. The ruling could also dismiss over 200 pending cases. The plaintiffs have confirmed they will be appealing the ruling.

  • Limiting the amount of time children spend using screens may help safeguard their future mental health. A recent study published in JAMA Network Open, from Finnish researchers, found children that spent more time using screens, particularly mobile devices, were more likely to experience increased stress and depression in adolescence. The researchers also found that regular exercise in conjunction with less screen time helped to promote more robust and resilient mental health.

  • A new opinion from EFSA has declared statin alternative, monacolin K – found in red yeast rice, is unsafe for consumption, at any dose. The new opinion considers even doses as low as 3 mg per day could lead to severe adverse effects, as EFSA once again fails to assess safe intake levels and has over-generalised risks. The EFSA opinion is in direct opposition to recent studies supporting the use of red yeast rice The new opinion will see the drafting of a new EU regulation, which in turn, could result in a ban for red yeast rice supplements in EU member countries, thus removing a highly effective option for those who don’t want to use statins, also reducing people's freedom to choose natural alternatives to pharmaceutical drugs
  • US researchers have created a synthetic form of the antioxidant/anti-inflammatory compound carnosic acid found in rosemary and sage, diAcCA, as a potential treatment for Alzheimer's. The creation of a synthetic alternative to carnosic acid, gives big pharma an opportunity to once again patent natural therapeutics and profit from nature's bounty.

ANH-USA Update

  • US Health and Human Services Secretary, Robert F Kennedy Jr, has been lambasted in mainstream media for recommending the use of nutrients to combat measles and bird flu. Far from being wacky, his views bring a long-overdue spotlight to the growing issue of nutrient deficiences in Americans and the importance of people being educated about all options to enable them to make informed decisions about how to support their immune health. • A statewide campaign is hotting up as big agri-tech companies continue to press for the introduction of immunity bills. The ANH-USA team take a look at the growing body of science showing the very real harms of glyphosate-based pesticides and why these bills need to be stopped to protect Americans' health. Take action...
  • Global agri-tech companies led by Bayer are trying to gain immunity from prosecution for the harms caused by their products by lobbying for new state laws, which would protect them from being sued. They’re being aided and abetted in their campaign by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Check the list and if your State is there, click the link to take action to stop big chem obtaining a get out of jail free card to Make America $ick Again!
  • Authorities continue to use fear and compliance to drive the use of pharmaceutical solutions rather than inform people about immune resilience, nutrition and alternative health strategies. This time the focus is on measles and avian flu and vaccination once again ignoring a truly robust public health strategy that would allow people to make an informed decision about how they care for their health.
